Frequently asked

Who regulates insurance in South America?

Each country has a national supervisor: SUSEP in Brazil (with ANS for health plans), the Superintendencia de Seguros de la Nación (SSN) in Argentina, the CMF in Chile, the Superintendencia Financiera (SFC) in Colombia, the SBS in Peru, the SCVS in Ecuador, the APS in Bolivia, SUDEASEG in Venezuela and the central banks of Paraguay and Uruguay. Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru were reconciled against their registers or industry directories for this release; the other markets are compiled from market knowledge.

How do I check whether an insurer is licensed?

Open the regulator website linked in the table and look for its register of licensed entities, usually published annually in a gazette or on a "licensed companies" page. This directory links every insurer to its regulator and records which register it was checked against.

How often are the registers updated?

Most supervisors publish a full list once a year and announce licence grants or revocations in between. Insurers Global re-verifies against the published register and records the date on each country page.
